Seasons change, some songs dissapear
Shadows dance among the ashes,
Holding heartbeats that we continue to feel
Voices we remember that touch us eternally,
As our future is submerged with despair
Avenues of sadness and desperation appear,
Black shirted balaclava wearing racist thugs
Spread division bathed and laced with fear,
While govenments make protest terrorism
And we walk into the obscenity of fascism,
Power is used to proscribe freedoms path
To prop up foreign government lies,
Make nations complicit, without consent
Duplicitous in nature, totally out of touch,
Criticise all, make themselves beyond reproach
Abominable energies cancelling tranquility,
Their bonds of light and trust nowhere to be seen
They don't seem to listen, making people scream,
Beyond their dark reflections of ugliness
I try to ignore the continuing insidiousness,
Being woke in thought without callousness
Do not abandon myself to hopelessness,
Will not be controlled by powers untender
Inner defences fight back, refuse to surrender,
Against forces of disarray tearing each other apart.
In these moments of sadness and madness
Pain numbing deep inside, instead of gladness,
In times overshadowed by hatred and anger
Enable my voice to speak in the name of love,
Let poems keep on delivering illumination
Colours of orange and bronze, signal autums arrival,
Allows things of goodness, continue to inspire
Beyond prisms of blackness, sparkling in abundance,
Cycles of smiles and laughter, scatters all the hate
Permit hope to rise, before it's too bloody late,
Beyond barbarity, use poetry to resist
Reaffirm binding warmth and humanity,
Celebrate diversity beyond polorization
Against superfluous share goodness,
As WH Auden wrote on the eve of World War II:
“All I have is a voice
To undo the folded lie,
The romantic lie in the brain
Of the sensual man-in-the-street
And the lie of Authority
Whose buildings grope the sky:
There is no such thing as the State
And no one exists alone;
Hunger allows no choice
To the citizen or the police;
We must love one another or die.”
